TEST DRIVE MEME

Possible Scenarios
Please note that all characters will initially arrive in their assigned housing; they are free to explore the City to their heart's content after that!

01. Arriving: You're pretty sure you knew where you were before you closed your eyes. But somewhere between then and now, you discover that you're definitely not there. In fact, the setting is so unfamiliar to you that it's bordering on unnerving and questions start to stack. Have you been abducted? Did you get drunk and pass out somewhere and not remember? Whatever the case, you need some answers. Or maybe this is familiar and the only thing that doesn't make sense is the layer of dust on everything around you which obviously means some time has passed. How much? No one seems to know. What you do know is that sitting around and waiting for answers is likely not going to happen.

So, you set out and hope to run into someone in the City that looks like they may be in a similar situation. Or, at the very least a person that might be able to provide some explanation. Veteran Chosen, make sure you warn the new people about the Shadows and advise them to steer clear of dark alleys and things that go bump in the night.

02. Party, party!: Now that you've arrived and hopefully settled, it's time to unwind. Inside your welcome basket is an invitation from the Duchess, who has decided to celebrate the growing population of the City with a massive "Welcome to the City" party in the Tower District. Wine spills free, and drugs abound, this is the kinda party that caters to all! The wicked and debauched demons and the good and decent who, if not careful, might end up tainted and corrupted at some point, like everyone else. Even if it's only for one night, why not cut loose and forget about whatever is pressing on your mind?

Nothing to wear? Check your closet, we're sure you'll find something suitable to wear.

03. Prominence: Everyone knows that the City sometimes influences its population on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, you arrived right in the middle of a heavy Prominence. Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, or Pride: choose your sin and get wicked. You'll find it's hard to avoid being sinful, almost as if your basic instincts are taking over.

04. Run!: A lot can go wrong in the City; demon attacks, muggings or there's even danger of being plucked from the streets and forced to partake in the Coliseum's version of Fight Club (if you know, you know). There are plenty of unsavoury types that all Chosen must be aware of. They rule the night, and once the sun goes down it becomes the Sinning Hour. Demons and monsters and humans capable of inciting just as much fear, if not more, come out to play. Mind yourself. It's hardly a tea party out there.

05. Network: Broadcast a video, voice or text message to anyone in your phone's directory. All Chosen have a device that they can use to communicate. Those that are returning will find their phone as it was, though without any contact that was previously in the City that is not currently. For the newly Chosen, a device will be supplied in your welcome basket and will match the type of telecommunications that was being used at the time of their exit.

[ The first thing Christine thinks when she awakens is "Not again." It should be noted that this is not because she's been to the City before, but rather this isn't her first kidnapping. Really, she's starting to wonder if she isn't a magnet for this sort of thing. The second thing she thinks is "Azoth? Where are you?" Thankfully that question is answered quickly by the brief brush against her mind by her animas, who is in the next room exploring. Christine walks out to join the small peregrine falcon and take her first proper look at the City through the the impressive windows of the Magnolia Tower.

Well, this tells her nothing about where she is or who brought her here. It seems she'll have to investigate so off she goes. And it only takes her a few minutes to understand what an elevator is before she's at ground level and exploring the city. It's impossible to know if she's alone in being kidnapped but seeing how she's allowed to just walk the streets her kidnapper wasn't keen to keep her confined. The woman squints up at the skyscrapers in between watching her step so as not to run into anyone. Granted, the falcon on her shoulder is also good at telepathically warning her as well. ]

[ Christine assumes that by attending this welcome party that she'll get some answers as to why she's actually here and after checking the closet she finds a suitable gown. It really isn't made to have a falcon sit on her shoulder all night so she carefully slips Azoth into a shoulder bag to bring along. Naturally the bird is released from her prison as soon as they arrive and perches on the back of Christine's chair to watch the proceedings. Playing nervously with the vial of blue liquid she wears on a pendant around her neck, Christine eyes the other guests. Are they all in the same predicament? When offered wine she smiles politely and shakes her head no. Again, she's becoming an expert at being kidnapped. The last thing she needs is to set a new record after being drugged. Eventually she decides to open up to someone seated at the table with her. ]

So, is this your first kidnapping?

I am not unfamiliar with devices such as these used to communicate over distances, but can someone tell me if this is the best method with which to do research on this city? Or would the library have more information?

The devices are a bit of a learning curve. Do not worry there. As for the best way to research the city, I confess I have no answer there. I have scoured the library many times with no luck, which I suppose answers your second question as well. The internet does not offer much either, much to my disappointment.

[ Man, he wished they had texting in the 80s. So many conversations he could have avoided.]

Disappointing indeed. What sorts of books does the library offer, if ones concerning the city's history do not exist?

A wide array, many useful tomes on any topic a person might wish to learn. And the usual drivel of fiction and such. All that seems lacking is any true useful information on this world or its people.

[ Helpful nature, now there's a new one. At least one that texting can hide the shake of his head from. ]

Very likely so, yes. A point of frustration myself, I do admit.

Christine Delacroix. Would you happen to be a medical doctor or one who has reached a higher degree of learning not in the medical field?

A pleasure, Ms. Delacroix. A medical doctor, though I do have degrees in a nonmedical fields or two as well.

[ He could and would have listed them before, but he's been told it makes him look arrogant. A well cultivated act is important in a world with little protection.]

Simply curious, or relevant to your interests?

[ Honestly, she thinks those who've achieved great things should be proud of them but then again maybe that's why she awoke in Magnolia Tower as she has a great deal of pride herself. ]

Relevant. I am a healer and it's good to know who else might be called upon in times of need.

[ Oh, these two were going to get on well, or end up hating each other. Either way, it would be interesting. ]

A healer? Given this world's love of magic users, I am assuming you do not mean that in a hyperbolic sense. Go to City General, they are always hiring, I work there myself.

[Jaeger is nothing if not gracious company, keeping to his space and offering polite greetings and acknowledgement to his current companions. The shock of being here has worn off, leaving his sharp mind in charge again- looking for answers.

He's got a glass of wine but it's only barely touched, and his gaze lingers on the falcon as much as his fellow guests. Not unfriendly in the least, but searching, thoughtful.

And he's more than polite enough when Christine addresses him directly, offering her the slight tilt of a wry smile.]

Not my first, but certainly the most polite so far. The gift basket was a nice touch, I thought.

[He doesn't offer a hand, but an introduction seems in order at the very least.]

Andrew Jaeger. I take it you're "new" here as well?

Mm.

[ Said in response to the gift basket, that is. She's assuming it was given because they're being buttered up for something. ]

Christine Delacroix, and yes, I am.

[ A squawk from behind her causes her to flip her hair over her shoulder as she turns, briefly displaying a slightly pointed elven ear before the hair cascades back into place. She purses her lips at the bird. ]

Yes, all right. And this is Azoth.

[They're on the same page, then, because Jaeger isn't used to such an effusive welcome and he's worked in corporate setting for more than long enough to know the tactics. They're trying the carrot before the stick.

He nods a very serious greeting to the bird as if it's perfectly normal to him, before returning his gaze to Christine. The sight of that pointed ear doesn't startle him, either, and when he speaks again its easy, conversational.]

Nice to meet you both. Your companion?

Yes. I like to keep her close.

[ More like is required to keep her close but that's neither here nor there. ]

Are animal companions common in your world? It appears they're not in this place.

Not common, exactly, but to be entirely fair I'm specialized in a very unusual area of study. So it's something I'm at least passingly familiar with.

[He has the grace to look mildly sheepish. Also, he made a pretty bad pun there. Shame on him.]

I work in paranormal security. It exists in my world, but it's mostly a closely guarded secret.

Less so, here, it seems.

Hm.

[ Her brows raise, but she doesn't respond right away. A closely guarded secret? She wonders if that's something all of them have in common, and what their kidnappers know about each of them. ]

Now does that mean guarding the paranormal, or guarding against the paranormal?

[It does bear thought, because the city itself seems to be far more open to the strange than Jaeger is used to. Open enough that he's having this conversation at all, though talking with an elf and her intelligent bird companion further eases his concern.]

A little of both, honestly. Handling and dealing with dangerous objects, or making sure valuable things and people get to where they're going safely. Some bodyguard work, some investigation. Enough to keep me busy, for certain.
