TEST DRIVE MEME

Possible Scenarios
Please note that all characters will initially arrive in their assigned housing; they are free to explore the City to their heart's content after that!

01. Arriving: You're pretty sure you knew where you were before you closed your eyes. But somewhere between then and now, you discover that you're definitely not there. In fact, the setting is so unfamiliar to you that it's bordering on unnerving and questions start to stack. Have you been abducted? Did you get drunk and pass out somewhere and not remember? Whatever the case, you need some answers. Or maybe this is familiar and the only thing that doesn't make sense is the layer of dust on everything around you which obviously means some time has passed. How much? No one seems to know. What you do know is that sitting around and waiting for answers is likely not going to happen.

So, you set out and hope to run into someone in the City that looks like they may be in a similar situation. Or, at the very least a person that might be able to provide some explanation. Veteran Chosen, make sure you warn the new people about the Shadows and advise them to steer clear of dark alleys and things that go bump in the night.

02. Party, party!: Now that you've arrived and hopefully settled, it's time to unwind. Inside your welcome basket is an invitation from the Duchess, who has decided to celebrate the growing population of the City with a massive "Welcome to the City" party in the Tower District. Wine spills free, and drugs abound, this is the kinda party that caters to all! The wicked and debauched demons and the good and decent who, if not careful, might end up tainted and corrupted at some point, like everyone else. Even if it's only for one night, why not cut loose and forget about whatever is pressing on your mind?

Nothing to wear? Check your closet, we're sure you'll find something suitable to wear.

03. Prominence: Everyone knows that the City sometimes influences its population on a monthly basis. Unfortunately, you arrived right in the middle of a heavy Prominence. Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, or Pride: choose your sin and get wicked. You'll find it's hard to avoid being sinful, almost as if your basic instincts are taking over.

04. Run!: A lot can go wrong in the City; demon attacks, muggings or there's even danger of being plucked from the streets and forced to partake in the Coliseum's version of Fight Club (if you know, you know). There are plenty of unsavoury types that all Chosen must be aware of. They rule the night, and once the sun goes down it becomes the Sinning Hour. Demons and monsters and humans capable of inciting just as much fear, if not more, come out to play. Mind yourself. It's hardly a tea party out there.

05. Network: Broadcast a video, voice or text message to anyone in your phone's directory. All Chosen have a device that they can use to communicate. Those that are returning will find their phone as it was, though without any contact that was previously in the City that is not currently. For the newly Chosen, a device will be supplied in your welcome basket and will match the type of telecommunications that was being used at the time of their exit.

[ Clint had been in the city before, but she'd been possessed by a lovecraftian god and died there near the apparent end, so fuck if she remembers much of anything right now. This is a post-death hangover that makes her Thanos-induced five years look like cake.

So, walking around and trying to reorient herself in a city that looks familar-ISH, is a task. One that has her walk right into him, colliding against his side. ]

[ Said distractedly, before another second passes by and she realizes who it is. ]

Oh, hey, you're -- here. Hi.

[He's usually got a sixth sense about these things, being able to avoid people, knowing that someone's coming up on him. And maybe he's starting to realize that a lot of that relied on better hearing. (And maybe being thrown into god knows where god knows when god knows how has thrown him off his groove.)

(Also big cities just be like that.)

So it's easy to brush it off, except, except that he knows exactly who that is, realizes it a second before she seems to. Clint puts a steadying hand on her shoulder.]

Hi yourself. [There's some palpable relief at not being alone here. There's also the understanding that she has the power to have done something like this. But he is not in the habit of blaming her unjustly for anything. Weird shit just happens to people like them.] You okay? You hurt?

[divaricate]

[ she's not even up to date with Westview yet, so she ain't seen shit herself. ] I think I've been dead for a while, because the city looks just different enough. I died there, and now this is hell isn't it? We're in hell.

[ Said matter of factly, as she tries to focus on what's around her. Him mostly. ]

And it's more spin-y than I remember.

...I can't even say for sure that it isn't, but I'm pretty sure it's not. Laura'll be pissed if a heart attack in my sleep is what offed me. [Actually that would probably be a relief. But let's not think about that.

He guides her aside, out of the middle of everyone's way, to sit on some steps.] Just take it easy. You were kind of dead a while. [Five years. Nobody seems to have felt anything for it, but more magical sorts might have experienced it differently.] Just breathe nice and slow for me, okay? Pick a point and focus only on that 'til things stop spinning. Or close your eyes if you have to.

[divaricate]

[ Sitting down, she shakes her head slightly, while closing her eyes to get the spinning to stop. She can't help but snort a small laugh at the comment about how Laura would be mad if THAT'S how it happened. Because she would be. ] This new dead was way after Thanos. Death and I have matching friendship bracelets now.

[ And then she just lies back on the stairs. Not comfy, but who cares??? Not her that's who. ]

Do you not remember much of the city before?

[Caring about how one looks in public is for suckers and people who actually draw attention. So long as she doesn't need a hospital, she can do whatever the fuck she wants. Because it's the words coming out of her mouth that are way, way more alarming.]

I've never been to this city before. Are you saying you've been here? I don't usually get kidnapped in such a nice way.

[ Ah, one of those. The multiverse does that sometimes, wipes memories, brings in different versions of familiar people. ] No, I guess not. That happens too, people think they know you or you know them, and think you remember shit you actually don't. Some cases are more heart crushing than others. Multiverse one-oh-one.

[brandingproblem]

[He shakes his head slowly. That would sound a lot more like insane gibberish before he time traveled into different timelines by getting just, like, incredibly small, or watched a woman kill a younger but different version of herself.] So, what, we're different us-es than we know?

[divaricate]

Depends; sometimes you have to play twenty questions to find out. Like, I also have a sister in another similar version of our earth, for example. Her Wanda can make reality whatever she wants it to be; I cannot.

[There are a lot of things about Wanda he doesn't actually know, currently. He knows about Westview, for instance. SWORD might have moved in to try and quiet things down, but being as connected to things as he is, it's hard to have a whole town, even that small, go completely quiet without tripping a lot of alarm bells. He knows she was involved. He doesn't know a lot of specifics, but he knows there was mind control.

She's powerful. That he knows. She's always growing in power, has probably never really reached her limits. But could she simply make reality whatever she wanted like a Stone? He doesn't know. (Maybe if someone hadn't disappeared off the map in the aftermath, he might know. Or maybe he wouldn't.)

What he knows is he's here, now. What he knows is she's here, now. He can start from there, with the important things, the things that matter.]

Sounds complicated. [To put it simply.] You want me to get you some water, something to eat? To...recover. [from death apparently??? sure ok]

Complicated? Us? Never.

[ Ha. Ha ha.

With a sigh, she pulls her self upright, and rubs her eyes before opening them again. ]

Walking around now that I'm more coherent might be a good plan, anyway. Find the closest thing to ćevapčići that we can. And if that doesn't make me feel like a human again, then we know it's serious.

[ She says it like she's joking, but she's not really. ]

Maybe you should lead us with your nose and find us some. You're apparently a little more familiar with all this than I am.

[Or this version, this iteration of himself. Whatever the god damn fuck that means.

He hauls himself up to his feet and offers a hand to do the same for her.] You know me, never take anything seriously. [lies damn lies and statistics] But hey, even if you don't feel human, I'm friends with plenty of people not human, so you're in good company.

[divaricate]

[ She takes the offered hand and dusts herself off once she's upright. ]

I'll try. Worse case, we buy supplies, and make it ourselves. [ She gives a soft smile. ] Who are the non human friends? Also, I'm glad you're here. [ She is going to move to give him a hug now. Who cares what iteration of either of them this is, really. ]

Hey. [With a grin, returning the hug.] Now I know you're feeling a little better. [Because he would've started quietly vibrating with the urge to hug her otherwise! She gets, very briefly, lifted from the ground. Because it feels like an age since he's seen her. Since she's let herself be seen. Has it really been since the funeral...?]

Oh, you know, just a Norse god, a talking bipedal raccoon who isn't a raccoon, [clint barton does not police identities and if rocket says he isn't a raccoon then he isn't one so there] a blue chick with robot parts, the usual. But apparently I get more than enough weird with just humanity around.

[divaricate]

[ She hugs tightly back. ] Oh, for some reason I thought you meant other friends. I'm like 75 percent installed right now. [ She snorts lightly. ]

We've seen some shit, it's true. Prepare yourself for the shit here on top of that.

Careful, if I start feeling particularly patriotic, I might have to berate you for your language. [bc obviously steve can't be here haha right]

C'mon, let's find something to get you the other quarter installed. I could use some whatever the hell you said.

[ With a grin on her face that now absolutely shows she's a sarcastic troll, yet endearing, she sticks up a middle finger at the first comment. 75% is enough to mess with friends lovingly. ]

[ With a flick of both wrists, scarlet magic encircles her hands. Yeah she's talking about teleporting; she may have learned a few tricks here last time. ]

[He is an adult and has at least a decade and change on her. His very adult response is to stick his tongue out. Nyeh. Brat.]

I ever mention how much cooler you are than the sorcerers? They lose some jewelry, they lose access to fast travel. Posers.

Clearly they need to get better standards, wow. [ Another small laugh. ]

Don't barf on my shoes when we get there. [ Some people handle teleporting badly. And with that she's just gonna, poof them over. ]

I've handled shrinking down infinitesimally small to travel through time. Also, Rocket's ship hops around the galaxy. Pretty sure my stomach can handle it.

[And it can. It's disorienting as hell, simply being somewhere else, through the weirdest tug of magic. But nothing he can't handle with a breath and a small shake of his head.]

Am I supposed to feel tingly, or is that something where I call a doc if it doesn't go away in four hours? [Fucking with her, naturally.]]

[ She nods, as if to say 'fair points'. ]

Nope, that's a much different application of magic that can also be fun. [ oh my GODDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

That's a joke I would've expected out of your brother.

[He says it very casually. But to be very very fair, he also doesn't know if that's still...an emotional landmine.

Which means he's not lingering on it and moving right along-] Also, absolutely don't want to hear how you've applied it, I can and will turn my hearing aid off to not hear about it.

[ No, it makes her crack up laughing. ] What can I say? I'm full of surprises. Maturity is overrated today, I am cancelling it.

[ Coming up on a small diner type of place, she figures it's food. They probably have something close to what she wants. ]

[Good, because the little shithead absolutely would've cracked some kind of wise about speed and vibrating molecules. (And Clint would've come to the reasonable conclusion that the asshole doesn't last long.) (Ah, the could-have-beens.) (His favorite.)]
